Qualifications:
- Knowledge of gasoline/diesel engines, small and large
- Ability to read, interpret, and follow directions in the implementation of a comprehensive inspection/maintenance program for all school board vehicles
- Ability to learn School Board policies, State Board of Education policies, and Department of Highway and Safety regulations with regard to School Board vehicles
- Self-starter with ability to analyze and diagnose vehicle problems
- Ability to fill out necessary inspection/maintenance forms
- Ability to use a computer and to read and respond to diagnostic software
- Valid Class A commercial driver’s license with appropriate endorsements to operate a school bus within six (6) months of employment (or ability to obtain within six (6) months of meeting FDOT licensing requirements
- Completion of air-conditioning training and certification within twelve (12) months of employment
- Completion of Master Technician and DOE School Bus Inspector certification within one (1) year of employment
Preferred Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Three (3) years mechanical experience in the fleet maintenance field
*Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Assists in set-up and maintenance of vehicle inspection schedules for all School Board vehicles and equipment.
- Follows reporting procedures to report any areas of improvement that may be developed in the inspection/maintenance program.
- Reports deficiencies found during inspection process.
- Reports immediately on any vehicles that should be taken out of service.
- Reports any problem existing that is caused by driver neglect.
- Performs inspections, preventative maintenance service, and repairs in a safe and appropriate manner, as assigned.
- Maintains effective working relationships with other employees.
- Assumes duties, temporarily, in the absence of the Service Manager.
- Maintains garage area in a clean, safe, and orderly condition.
- Seeks and completes training in the use of tools/equipment, necessary to keep pace in the repair and maintenance of district buses; maintains and respects specialized equipment in the interest of longevity of utility.
- Performs multiple tests and analyses to diagnose, electronically, individual and integrated systems in the repair and maintenance of district vehicles.
- Inspects, diagnoses, and repairs air conditioning components and systems on district vehicles.
- Performs motor vehicle road-calls and recoveries.
- Responds to vehicle crashes and determines serviceability of vehicle as needed: e.g. safe to operate on the road.
- Performs all other job-related functions as may be assigned by the Transportation Service Manager or Director.
